Waiting for that perfect piece...

If I could sum up one word as a buyer of vintage and antique pieces it is - patience. There is often a wait in finding a piece that fits just right with your idea of beauty and what you want to place in your home. I actually love the idea of living simply and simplicity in the home, having key pieces that really stand out bringing me joy every time I look at them.
I still aspire to create a peaceful haven devoid of clutter but with 3 children it’s not quite the right time.
Nevertheless as a curator of Fine Art many years ago now, before my first son was born, I took pleasure in the white space as a blank canvas to show the creative works of many artists and makers. I still admire and love the calm of the museum and the space around an object that allows the viewer to see and to contemplate. It’s the space around an object that allows the nature of that object to shine.
A home with my children doesn’t, for me naturally offer such a space, but there is a calm when the house is tidy and there is a ‘feeling’ of contentment, when there is space to rest, settle and contemplate.
This image of artist James Heuter’s mid-century modern home, 1965 in California by Rob Kallick reminded me just how important a home can be as a place of sanctuary and just how important patience can be when we want our home to reflect our own unique sense of peace. Waiting to find just the right item to buy is so worth the wait and a reflection of our deep creativity and individuality.
